Springerville Unit 3 construction update

SpringervilleConstruction was 68 percent complete by the end of July of Tri-State's newest generating facility -- Springerville Generating Station Unit 3 located in eastern Arizona -- putting it ahead of a schedule that calls for the unit to be up and running in the third quarter of 2006.

On-site staff is at its peak with nearly 1,400 Bechtel manual and non-manual crew members and sub-contractors at the construction site. Through the end of July, workers had logged more than 2 million work hours on the project without a single lost-time accident.Project contractor Bechtel has continued to emphasize the importance of safe work practices even as construction work has sped ahead of the new accelerated timeline.

SpringervilleStructural steel is now in place for the boiler, turbine buildings, spray dry absorber (SDA) and baghouse. Installation of the turbine generator is essentially complete, the boiler walls are taking shape and the unit’s primary transformers have been installed. The cooling tower has been erected, water and lime ponds have been dug and lined and construction of the coal and lime handling systems are underway.
